I went to Hobby Lobby and got the headband ribbon in the fabric area at 50% off. I had no idea there were so many colors of headband ribbon, however I went with the black. I also got my tulle there. The first 2 tutus I made were newborn size, so I cut the tulle in 12 inch strips and then cut the strips down the middle length-wise. The tulle I bought was on 6 inch spools so my strips were 12 x 3 inches. I cut around 50 or 60 per tutu. I cut the headband ribbon at 15 1/2 inches.
I folded the tulle strips in half and then inserted the bottom row of holes in the headband ribbon. I used simple slip knots and pulled them tightly so they wouldn't come loose. I did the entire bottom row of the headband with black tulle, leaving only a few spaces open on each side so that I could sew it together at the end.
I wanted to add hot pink to this tutu so I cut my tulle strips the same size as the black but I added them in every other hole on the second row. This is where you can be creative and do whatever color combination you want and you can add as much tulle as you want. I added one more row of black tulle spread out every other hole, to add more fluff and I really liked the outcome.
I was so excited I decided to make a red one!
Once I was finished I just sewed the loose ends together by hand with black embroidery floss. This was super easy project and I can't wait to give them as gifts!
Here's another tutorial to make tutus with ribbon that I want to try and she has the sizes for the waist and length as well. http://www.myhousemycanvas.com/2012/09/diy-no-sew-toddler-tutu.html
Hopefully soon, I'll make matching headbands.
So cute! I may modify this (only going halfway around the ribbon) to make a tutu for my pup!!
